Location

The road to Taos

Casita Truchas is located in Northern New Mexico, on the slopes of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. North of Taos and the Pueblo, perfectly located in El Salto, the Casita is midway between the historic Town of Taos and world famous Taos Ski Valley.

It is 1½ miles off the main highway, offering the peace and serenity of a rural location. Since we are in the foothills of the mountains the views are fabulous all around.

The area

Rio Grande river

Ours is a very quiet neighborhood, as there are only a few neighbors. All the houses around us are on exclusive 3+ acres plots, covered in pinon and juniper trees. We are on the slopes of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, The views are of the Jemez Mountains about 60 miles away, the Truchas Peaks about 45 miles away and of the sweep of the Taos Valley (including the Town of Taos) and the Rio Grande Gorge where the Rio Grande River cuts through this broad expanse.

The road

Calle Coyote

Since the ½ mile private gravel road (Calle Coyote) on which we are located can be snowy in winter (we hope!), all-wheel or 4 wheel drive vehicles are preferred during ski season, although front wheel drive is usually just fine. The conditions depend on the weather of course, but we get Calle Coyote plowed promptly if needed. In the summer, any vehicle is appropriate and access is not a problem.

The situation

Casita front

Casita Truchas is at an elevation of 8,000 feet and the town of Taos (about 10 minute drive away) is at 6,500 feet. As a comparison, the base of Taos Ski Valley is at 9,200 feet, about 10 minute drive away in the other direction. Because of the slope of the land you drive into the Casita's parking area at the front door level (deck is just 3 steps up) and it's a one-story building. On the other side of the building however, the main view side, it's a 2-story building. Our garage is on the lower level, which is grade level at that point.
